“Empathy, Love & Passion”

“Work Does Not Have To Suck (CEO)
My grandfather died while I was working as a manager for a previous company. His funeral was on a Friday – the same day we had a big sale starting at my job.
I told my boss I needed to take the day off but I was met with resistance.
The sale was super important and a big weekend was ahead – we needed to perform extremely well
to hit our numbers for the quarter.
So I was guilted into rushing back to work.
I was a vital part of the store and we needed a full staff yada yada yada.
Funeral was Friday. Burial was up in rural Oklahoma. So I raced back afterwards so I could work the closing shift for the sale that same night.
I was young and the guilt from my boss worked.
Here’s the thing.
I lost respect and admiration for my boss that day.
Listen, I’m the type of dude who puts their whole soul into everything they do. Can’t half-ass it. I worked my tail off for this company. So much energy and passion. 70 hour weeks. Working sundays. Early mornings etc.
Whatever it took for us to be successful.
But my grandfather meant a lot to me.
And the lack of compassion to just take off that one freaking day – I’ll never forget it.
That company lost some of my soul that day. It lost a bit of my motivation. My passion.
If they couldn’t be there for me when I needed it then why should i always be there for them?
Relationships. Healthy ones. Go both ways.
And it’s just just the check and the money. Work can’t just be some transaction.
Your relationship should be flowing. A real relationship where your boss cares about you – the whole person – not just the results you bring to the job.
It’s gotta be more than that.
And great companies, cultures, and bosses understand that compassion and empathy is absolutely vital – we all go through things and some times we need a little grace and love.
Because of this one bad boss – I learned a lot.
They always say a bad boss will teach you what NOT to do one day.
So at regal we preach a culture of compassion.
Ambitious? Absolutely!
But a culture of ambition can also be compassionate!
Compassion. Empathy. It matters!
That company I worked for – what would they really have lost if they had given me the day off?
$1,000 bucks? $2,000 ?
If that.
But they lost way more bc of one bosses actions.
My heart and soul.
Guys, do not de-motivate your people!!
Show them love.
Show them compassion.
Show them empathy.
And they will always remember it!!!
