“For 45 years I have been sales and it’s more than a job… it’s a passion. My first sales job was when I was a newspaper boy and I had a 7 mile route with 109 papers. I realized that I passed a lot of houses that did not get the newspaper, and if I sold them a paper, it wouldn’t take much extra effort, but I would make more money. I did this until I was a senior in high school and eventually graduated to a moped instead of a bike, which was a big plus. A little effort does go a long way.” Brian Knopp – Hospitality Leader

8 Lies your workplace told you about success
By Jitender Girdhar

  • 90% of success is in the actions you control
  • Success is about progress, not perfection
  • Success is about impact, not titles.

What if everything you’ve been told about workplace success is a lie? The rules they tell you often keep you stuck, not ahead.

  1. Success is all about the numbers It’s about people and impact, not just metrics. Focus on creating value, not just tracking stats.
  2. Hard work is always recognized. It’s often overlooked or taken for granted. Recognition needs to be earned, but also given.
  3. You need to follow the rules to succeed Innovation often requires breaking boundaries Be bold and challenge the status quo.
  4. Leaders always have all the answers. True leaders seek input and collaboration. Leadership is about empowering others.
  5. The company will have your back. Priorities shift, and loyalty is not always mutual. Focus on your growth, not just company goals.
  6. Success comes from endless sacrifice. Balance is key to long-term well-being. Overwork doesn’t guarantee progress.
  7. Promotions are based on performance alone. Office politics and timing often play a big role. Sometimes, it’s about being in the right place at the right time.
  8. You need to fit in to get ahead. Authenticity often leads to real success. Stand out by being true to yourself.

Success isn’t about working harder; it’s about working smarter, standing out,
and staying true to yourself.

Break free from these lies and define success on your terms.

Which of these lies have you heard before, and how did you overcome them?
