Your emotions shouldn’t control you. You control them.
By Veronique Barret
Here’s how to stay in control when emotions start to take over:
Stress doesn’t have to dictate your actions.
The best leaders know how to reset before reacting.
If you’re quick to react, you might say something you regret.
But if you take just 6 seconds to pause, you regain control.
This simple shift can transform your approach to stress:
1. Breathe Before You React
↳ Take a slow, deep breath in. Hold. Exhale. Repeat.
↳ This simple act slows your heart rate and clears your mind.
↳ It gives you space to respond, not just react.
2. Label the Emotion
↳ Name what you’re feeling: “I’m frustrated.” “I feel overwhelmed.”
↳ This moves brain activity from emotion to logic.
↳ The moment you name it, its power weakens.
3. Create a Physical Pause
↳ Change your body’s state to reset your mind.
↳ Stretch, take a sip of water, or stand up.
↳ Movement disrupts emotional spirals and brings clarity.
4. Delay Your Response
↳ Don’t hit send. Don’t snap back. Just wait.
↳ Give yourself 6 seconds – enough time for the stress chemicals to fade.
↳ Most regrets happen when we react too fast.
👉 The best leaders don’t react.
They pause, process, then respond.
Mastering this habit builds emotional intelligence,
better relationships, and stronger leadership.
