HOSPITALITY LEADERSHIP… Micromanagement

To me, there is nothing that bothers me more than micromanagement. This is a ‘trust issue. One of my core values is ‘learn from your mistakes’. This allows team members to grow and make better decisions in the future.”

TRUST ISSUES
By George Stern

Managers: If you care more about when someone works than what they deliver, you’re the problem, not them.

Micromanagement doesn’t come from high standards. It comes from low trust.

If you’re hiring adults, treat them like adults.

Here are 8 ways to lead without hovering:

  1. Set Clear Goals
Define what success looks like, and then get out of the way.
  2. Focus on Outcomes
Measure results delivered, not hours logged.
  3. Give Autonomy
Let people choose how they get the work done.
  4. Normalize Mistakes
Expect small errors – it’s how people learn and improve.
  5. Ask How to Help
Swap “What are you doing?” for “What do you need from me?”
  6. Wait to Be Asked
Don’t jump in unless they ask for your support.
  7. Respect Work Styles
Not everyone thinks, plans, or creates like you do.
  8. Coach, Don’t Control
Ask questions that unlock solutions instead of prescribing them.

Any others you’d add?
